Educational Component
Each au pair / companion enrolls in and attends courses at a post-secondary institution during the exchange program.
Host families on the Au Pair and Extraordinaire programs pay tuition and fees (books, etc.) up to $500; $1,000 on the EduCare program for each 12-month term; up to $500 ($1,000 for EduCare) during the 9 month extension; and $250 ($500 for EduCare) during a 6-month extension.
Host families establish agreeable time frames to attend classes, assist with course registration and provide transportation to and from classes.
Au pairs on the Au Pair or Extraordinaire program must complete no less than six hours of academic credit or its equivalent; companions on the EduCare program must complete no less than 12 hours of academic credit or its equivalent during the first 12-month exchange.
Au pairs and companions are to continue their education during the extension term to complete 3 hours of academic credit (6 hours for EduCare participants) if extending for 6 months; 6 hours of academic credit (12 hours for EduCare participants) if extending 9 or 12 months.
As a general rule, one 3-credit course usually requires three hours of classroom study per week over a 15-week term. Course selection will depend on the individual’s educational, cultural or career interests. Costs exceeding that which is provided by the host family is to be covered by the au pair/companion.
Your local community counselor will work with the au pair/companion and host family to advise which accredited educational and cultural courses are available locally and provide guidance as she registers for courses.
