Meet Leonie & her Host Family

Real Life Stories from Au Pair in America

Meet Leonie and her Host Family

"Before we had four people in our family. Since Leonie came we have five people in our family."

That's how Leonie's five-year-old host child describes his au pair: as a member of the family, not a babysitter, a caregiver or a friend. His parents couldn't agree more!

Leonie makes every day a new adventure for her two host children. She walks the three-year-old daughter to preschool every day rather than driving the 1.5 miles. The girl loves these morning adventures and every evening reports what they saw. She was proud to lead her father on the same walk and point out all the things she does with Leonie every morning. Each afternoon Leonie has a special activity planned for the children. Whether it's playing at a local park (never the same one twice in a week) or doing an art project, the children have a wonderful, enriching time that is free of television or other electronics.

In addition to her child care responsibilities at home, Leonie has beecome involved in her host community and its traditions. She took it upon herself to decorate the house for Halloween with the children, a big surprise when her host parents came home from work. She volunteered to help direct a play at the local elementary school on her own time.

Before Leonie arrived, her host mother was most worried about what it would be like to have a stranger living with the family. Now she is worried about the four broken hearts that will get left behind when the fifth member of their family has to leave.
