Au Pair in America in New York
Regional Update
Regional Presence:
Au Pair In America has more than 30 clusters in Connecticut and New York. The majority of the families live in Westchester and Fairfield Counties but population centers are served across both states.
Quarterly Message:
July 2009
NY and CT clusters are gearing up for planning many outdoor activities that will introduce au pairs to American activities. Counselors will take au pairs to local baseball games, host barbeques, and travel down rivers in canoes. Canoe trips are a favorite activity and each year brings new adventures to document in photos and emails home. Several clusters take a yearly walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, focusing on the view as they begin in Brooklyn Heights and end up in Chinatown for a lunch of dim sum--a unique cultural exchange activity! As we head towards summer, many counselors focus their quarterly childcare meeting on summer safety. There are many useful tips on the American Pediatric website. Something new this year will be a visit to one of our host family’s vineyard. The Shoreline and New Haven clusters will learn about growing/harvesting grapes and will be part of the ‘picking team” in September. We’ll be sure to take pictures and post them for all to see.
We're all looking forward to "springing forward" to warmer weather!

Educational Information for Au Pairs
The information listed here is your starting point to fulfilling the education requirement. Your community counselor will have the most popular and affordable choices in your area.
- The schools listed here are not all reasonable options. Ask your community counselor for the schools closest to you.
- Continuing Education (also Adult Education or Lifelong Learning) classes are generally the most affordable options for au pairs.
- Review the cost, class schedule, and transportation needed for the classes you are interested in with your host family. You need to be responsible about selecting courses that meet at times that will not conflict with your work schedule. Take into consideration the time it will take to travel between home and the campus. Your host family must approve your plans.
- Host families reimburse tuition costs and costs of related materials (books and supplies) up to $500 ($1000 for EduCare) for you to complete your six semester hours (12 for EduCare), or the equivalent. You are responsible for all payments for tuition, fees, books and materials that exceed the host family’s contribution. Education money is not paid to you in cash if you do not use the complete amount.
