Regional Update
Regional Presence:
Au Pair In America has more than 30 clusters in Connecticut and New York. The majority of the families live in Westchester and Fairfield Counties but population centers are served across both states.

As we move into fall, the au pairs often say that this is the most beautiful time of year in CT and NY. Indian summer with all its shades of color, is a time to enjoy being outside. Many clusters will be hiking, kayaking, and continuing to enjoy the beaches. More than 800 au pairs and their counselors will participate in a cultural event on the Spirit of New York, a cruise around Manhattan that will offer the au pairs lunch, entertainment and a DJ. It’ll be an afternoon of fun for all.
With the start of school, cluster meetings are preparing the au pairs for schedule changes, homework expectations and as well as providing safety tips.
November is a great time to learn about American football. Many clusters will attend football games-Fairfield and New Haven County au pairs will attend a Yale game as well as a tour of the famous university. The season will be punctuated by Halloween and Thanksgiving, holidays that are new to the au pairs-costume parties are a big hit with the clusters!
We’re approaching the holiday season, a perfect opportunity to share our traditions and learn from each other-we’re bringing the world together every day!
Regional Representative:
Gail Tomanelli, Regional Representative for Region 9, CT and NY, joined APIA in 1991 as a Community Counselor in Greenwich, CT. She became the Regional Representative for this very busy region of 32 clusters in 1996. Her responsibilities in this position include:
- Interview and train new CCs
- Realignment of cluster territories
- Support of the field staff
- Support of region's marketing efforts
- Liaison between management and field
- Arrange and facilitate meetings for the region's counselors
- Special projects
Gail is the proud mother of a "Rock Journalist" and a student at Muhlenburg College. She recently completed an MBA at UCONN.

Educational Information for Au Pairs
The information listed here is your starting point to fulfilling the education requirement. Your community counselor will have the most popular and affordable choices in your area.
- The schools listed here are not all reasonable options. Ask your community counselor for the schools closest to you.
- Continuing Education (also Adult Education or Lifelong Learning) classes are generally the most affordable options for au pairs.
- Review the cost, class schedule, and transportation needed for the classes you are interested in with your host family. You need to be responsible about selecting courses that meet at times that will not conflict with your work schedule. Take into consideration the time it will take to travel between home and the campus. Your host family must approve your plans.
- Host families reimburse tuition costs and costs of related materials (books and supplies) up to $500 ($1000 for EduCare) for you to complete your six semester hours (12 for EduCare), or the equivalent. You are responsible for all payments for tuition, fees, books and materials that exceed the host family’s contribution. Education money is not paid to you in cash if you do not use the complete amount.
