Blogs: Updates from the Chicago Area

Community Counselors in Illinois have been busy posting information about various events in their clusters.

Au Pair Trip to Disney World
Two counselors in Chicago, Sandee Plescia and Kathy Kressner, took 52 au pairs to Disney World for a fast-paced (guaranteed to see all 4 parks in 3 days) trip. This is the 6th annual trip and the au pairs love it! It was a magical time for all.

Chinese New Year
The oldest and most important festival in China is the Spring Festival, more commonly known in the West as Chinese New Year. 2010 is the Year of the Tiger.

Global Awareness

Global Awareness Branches Out

In December 2009 Global Awareness visited the Ronald McDonald House of New York to present Holidays Around the World to the children and their families. Au pairs from Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico sang Feliz Navidad as the children accompanied them with homemade maracas.

The au pairs presented a mini Spanish language lesson, gave out candy, and colored flags with the children. Everyone enjoyed two hours of fun and laughter.

Driving Safety

Child Safety Tips: Driving

In the winter, you are likely to find ice and snow on the roads in many parts of the country. There are some basic rules to remember to stay safe in the car in difficult driving conditions: Driving Safety Tips.

Some road safety tips:

  • Accelerate slowly, especially on hills
  • If you skid, try to steer in the direction the car is sliding to regain control
  • Remember that bridges and exit ramps are icier than roads

For more tips, check out our online safety resources for families and au pairs.

Calendar of the Season

Activities for Parents and Children

The Calendar of the Season is an interactive feature on the Au Pair in America website that gives children, parents, and au pairs a fun and informative look at each month of the year through cultural activities and historical facts.

This month, we clicked on the 8th and discovered that it is a good day for a Color Walk!

Choose a color, walk around the neighborhood and see how many things you can find of that color.
