Global Awareness Birthday Parties
Global Awareness au pairs are sharing their culture with young children at birthday parties. Marina, from Germany, introduced her country to 5-year-olds by teaching them and their parents a few words of German while they colored pictures of the German flag and animals. The flags were mounted on straws.
Inga, another au pair from Germany, introduced her favorite chocolate to the children in a game they played called “topfschlagen.” One of the children wears a blindfold and carries a stick. A chocolate treat is placed under a saucepan, and the children shout directions to the person searching for the treasure. When the person wearing the blindfold taps his stick on the saucepan, he gets to eat the hidden treat! The children learned how to shout simple directions in German while they played the game.
The party ended with “Happy Birthday” sung in German while the children waved their German flags.
